Enjoy a Confident Smile with Braces
Whether you are a child, teenager or adult, having confidence in the appearance of your smile is important. As the first thing most people notice, your teeth have an effect on your entire appearance. A straight smile can make all the difference when trying to make a good first impression. If you have crooked or misaligned teeth, braces may be the right option to get the straight smile you’ve always wanted. And since teeth that aren’t aligned properly can make brushing and flossing difficult or less effective, the teeth-straightening effect of braces can benefit not only the look of your smile, but also the overall health of your mouth. Read on to learn how braces can help you achieve a straight, picture-perfect smile.
What Problems Do Braces Address?
Braces can correct the following oral health issues for both child and adult patients:
- Crooked, crowded or protruding teeth
- Malocclusion (or a “bad bite”) caused by jaw misalignment
- Bite problems caused by bad habits (thumb sucking, mouth breathing, etc.)
- Teeth that have shifted due to an accident or injury
- Jaw problems due to a misaligned bite
The Types of Braces Available
Metal braces. These braces are made of stainless steel metal in a network of brackets, arch wires and elastic bands to put gentle, constant pressure on the teeth in order to gradually move them into an aligned position.
Ceramic braces. These are similar in function to metal braces, except that they are made from a clear ceramic material. Since they are less noticeable in appearance, these are a popular choice for many patients (especially adults).
Lingual braces. Lingual braces are placed behind the teeth, near the palate. These types of braces work the same as metal or ceramic braces, in that they put pressure on the teeth to slowly shift them into alignment. Many people prefer lingual braces to other types since they are less noticeable (as they are hidden behind your teeth). Since they are custom-made, they are more expensive than some other types of braces, and require a more involved treatment plan.
Aligner trays. Aligner trays are clear, removable oral appliances that are used to gradually straighten teeth. Because they are less noticeable than other types of braces, and are easily removable for cleaning and eating, aligner trays are a popular choice for teeth straightening.
Getting Your Braces On: What to Expect
The process of placing metal or ceramic braces begins with your teeth being thoroughly cleaned and then dried. A bonding glue will be applied to your teeth, and the braces will be installed on your teeth, with the brackets attached to the outer surface (or the inner surface, for lingual braces), and arch wires (flexible wires) connecting the brackets. Bands are applied to the molars to hold the framework in place and small elastic bands are placed to attach each arch wire to a bracket. Adjustments are then made to the braces as needed.
Aligner trays are removable teeth aligners that don’t require placement; however, as they are custom-made to fit each patient’s mouth, this will require a dental visit so that we can make an impression of your bite to create your aligner trays. Once made, you should expect to wear these aligner trays day and night (only removing them for cleaning and eating) for the duration of your treatment (typically 12 months or less).
